Turning Lyme(s) into Lemonade: Meghan's Lyme Story
If you’re reading this article, you probably know the amazing work Hannah does with Chronically Capable. To start a company after her struggles with Lyme disease is inspiring. Hannah reached out to connect as we share similar stories: two young women whose chronic illness led them to build companies in hopes of helping others. I am so thankful Hannah is allowing me to share how Lyme disease led me to start a CBD company with other chronic illness warriors. Here’s my story:
As an adventurous young girl, you could always find me exploring the outdoors and its beauty. Around the age of seven, I was bit by a tick and developed a fever of 104-degrees.
A healthy child shouldn’t be experiencing chronic muscle and joint pain, brain fog and fatigue. I had constant “growing” pains in my arms and legs. My Mom and Grandma would rub me down with menthol pain-relieving cream almost every night. Still I would wake up crying from the pain, wanting to go to the hospital.
After years of suffering, I went to the doctor when I was 18 years old and finally received a diagnosis – it was Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection you get from the bite of an infected tick. At first, Lyme disease usually causes symptoms such as rash, fever, headache, and fatigue. But if it is not treated early, the infection can spread to your joints, heart, and nervous system.
After initial antibiotic treatment, my symptoms persisted. I was then misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia and prescribed pharmaceutical drugs. Diagnosed with Lyme once again by a specialist, I was only given more pharmaceuticals. After rounds of antibiotics and enduring their never-ending list of side effects, I decided to stop using them all together.
In 2016, I visited a friend in California and came across cannabidiol—generally referred to as CBD. Desperate to alleviate my pain, I decided to try it out. The first time I tried CBD, I instantly felt relief. My muscle and joint pain subsided. I didn’t wake up in the middle of the night to slather cream all over. A whole new chapter began as I finally found a natural remedy to help me cope with the agonizing Lyme symptoms I had lived with for so long.
As I tried a variety of CBD products, I quickly learned that not all CBD is created equal. Some companies were selling falsely advertised CBD products with little to no CBD. I needed a high-quality product – from a company I could trust to share what was in their products and, more importantly, what was not in them. Welcome the birth of Ergo Hemp Co. Now, I find that educating people about how CBD can help is my favorite and perhaps the most significant part of my job.
